Recent data indicates that  the global polar bear population is between 22 000 and 25 000.

How many polar bears are hunted annually?
Subsistence hunting accounts for a low number of polar bear casualties. In Canada Trophy hunting accounts for 700 polar bear deaths a year. This number may increase since the province of Nunavut routinely increases the kill quota. In Greenland hunters currently kill between 200 and 250 polar bears per year.

How do chemicals and PCBs get ingested?
The ocean is under chemical assault. Polar bears are the highest up on the food chain and ingest all of the chemicals of their prey such as seals and fish. Other chemicals that are ingested include mercury, arsenic and lead.

Why does Canada allow trophy Hunting?
This is a revenue generator.  Canada has a poor record when it comes to protecting wildlife if income is to be made. One proven instance of this is the Canadian Seal Hunt.

How much does the government earn from this practice?
$50.00cdn  for a non resident hunting license.

$750.00cdn for a polar bear trophy.

6% GST on top of the above fees.

What is the Status of the Polar Bear?
On May 4, 2006, the IUCN Red List was published and it upgraded the polar bear from conservation dependent status to vulnerable. (also known as threatened)

How does Global Warming affect polar bears?
Thinning ice makes it more difficult for polar bears to reach their prey. They may also find it more difficult to navigate.
